UGC NET December 2026 Eligibility Criteria
As per the notice, eligibility for the test is based on the candidate’s Master’s degree:
- General/UR/General-EWS candidates must have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in a Master’s degree or equivalent in Humanities and Social Science (including languages), Computer Science and Applications, Electronic Science, etc.
- OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/Third Gender candidates must have secured at least 50% marks (without rounding off) in a Master’s degree or equivalent examination.
Candidates who are pursuing their Master’s degree, have appeared for their final year examination, or whose results are awaited or delayed can also apply. Such candidates will be admitted provisionally and will be considered eligible for JRF or Assistant Professor eligibility only after passing the Master’s degree with the required percentage. They must complete the degree within two years from the date of the NET result, failing which they will be treated as disqualified.
Age Limit to UGC NET December Registration 2026
- JRF: Not more than 30 years as on the first day of the month in which the examination is concluded, i.e. 01.12.2026.
- Assistant Professor: No upper age limit.
- Admission to PhD: No upper age limit.

Candidates must complete the process online through the NTA website. The key steps are:

- Register using a valid email address and mobile number, which must belong to the candidate or their parents/guardians.

- Registration has also been enabled through the single sign-on service – Meri Pehchan of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

- Fill in personal, academic and category details carefully, and upload the required documents.
- Pay the applicable examination fee before the deadline.
- Submit the form and take a printout or save a copy for future reference.
Only one application is to be submitted by a candidate. NTA has also advised candidates to use Aadhaar verification while completing the form, as it facilitates the registration and examination process, particularly at examination centres, and helps in processing the JRF.
